MINAMOTO YOSHITSUNE
Minamoto no Yoshitsune - 1990 - Color - Fullscreen - Extras - 2 Discs

One evening, when the monk Saito Musashibo Benkei was luring for his sword
number 1000 at Gojo bridge, Shanao (later Yoshitsune), a young man of small and
fragile stature passed by. He wore a nice sword and played the flute. It was an
unequal fight, but the outcome was different than one would have expected. Not the
physically superior Benkei won, but the agile Yoshitsune. He defeated the crude giant
with his swift and skillful movements and superior fighting techniques. Legend has it
that Shanao had received his sword training by the Tengu. They are mythological
creatures, half-human/half-bird, and first-class fighters in martial art. After this
remarkable "mother of all sword fights", Benkei vowed eternal loyalty to Shanao. His
life took a complete turn. From now on he accompanied his new lord through
numerous adventures and battles as the faithful vassal and second banana. It was
the time of the Genpei wars, when the Minamato clan finally defeated their arch-rivals,
the Taira clan in fierce fighting. Yoshitsune was the brilliant military leader of the
Minamato. Japanese history and legend books and Kabuki plays are full of
Yoshitsune's audacious and clever moves. And on his side, his faithful vassal Benkei,
feared by the enemy and revered by book readers and movie and theater spectators.

MIYAMOTO MUSASHI
Miyamoto Musashi - 1944 - B/W - Fullscreen - DVD Extras

Directed by the legendary MIZOGUCHI Kenji!
Miyamoto Musashi vs Sasaki Kojiro!

This is a story about Miyamoto Musashi, the most famous swordsman in Japanese
history. This movie is one of the greatest to portray Musashi as the great swordsman and
romantic hero that he was in life. Filmed in Showa year 19 (1944) while Japan was
engulfed in "Kuraitani" ("the valley of darkness" aka World War II) facing defeat, yet despite
the hardships of the time they still managed to produce this unforgettable masterpiece.
Unfortunately, many other japanese films were destroyed during the war.

The time was in Keicho era (1596-1615). Nonomiya Nobuo and Mataichiro (brother and
sister) visit Miyamoto Musashi in Sagano, and ask him to teach them the ways of the
sword, so they can avenge their murdered father. Musashi declines their request stating
the sword isn't for revenge. However, they don't give up and Musashi finally decides to
accept their request. The brothers Hidarimoto Kurodo and Magoshiro who murdered
Nobuo and Mataichiro's father, learns that the brother and sister are taking lessons from
Musashi. Realizing that they are in trouble, they decided to ask Sasaki Kojiro for help. After
Musashi left Nobuo and Mataichiro's hiding place, the Hidarimoto brothers and Kojiro
attacked them, and Mataichiro is brutally killed by Kojiro. A devastated Nobuo again visits
Musashi and reports of Mataichiro's death, now pleading for Musashi's immediate help.
Once Musashi hears of this, he summons the code of bushido within, sets off determined
to destroy his arch-enemy Sasaki Kojiro, once and for all! (The famous duel took place at
Ganryu Island in the year 1612).

The director, Mizoguchi Kenji has perfectly adapted the literary classic written by
Yoshikawa Eiji. It was unusual for Mizoguchi to embrace the theme of "Bushido" in a film
like this, yet the portrayal of Musashi remarkably showed his warm-hearted personality.
With it's great timeless story, great action, and direction by one of the greatest Japanese
masters it's not an understatement to call this movie a real collectors treasure. And it's
probably one of the "oldest" surviving samurai films available now with English Subtitles.
Because of the age of this film, some film elements such as grain/lines and washed out
scenes are present, but overall very nice, enjoyable and highly recommended!

NINJA HUNT
"Ninja Gari" - 1982 - Color - Fullscreen - Extras

It's a rare occasion when a noted filmmaker like Yamauchi Tetsuya gets to re-visit a
previous film, and in this re-make of NINJA GARI, he not only does that, but has created
an even better piece. While the original from 1964 starred the great old-time actor
Konoe Jushiro, this version is perfectly cast with his son Matsukata Hiroki in the lead
as Wadakuro, one of four ronin hired to fight against the Shogunate's plot to abolish the
Gamo Clan, who are struggling to reinstate their young heir Tanemaru as their Lord.
Facing the threat of the Koga Ninja, Wadakuro shows his own cruelty while on a

deaths, a dark story line and is completely without any light-hearted 'humor' elements
that Toei used to incorperate back in the golden era. And with Matsukata Hiroki's
outstanding martial skills, the swordplay is even better in this one. This is definitely one
of the best ninja movies ever made!

of his most trusted generals. This story is a pre-cursor to those later events as the
brilliant military strategist Saito Dosan rises to power and notoriety as a great lord in his
own right. Directed by Kudo Eiichi and with a tremendous supporting cast that includes
Nakamura Toru as Oda Nobunaga and Chiba Shinichi as Akechi Mitsutsugu, battle
scenes of awesome power and a unique view of Japanese history, this is a marvelous
production highlighted by the action scenes done by the Japan Action Club (JAC).

SAMURAI BANNERS - YAMAMOTO KANSUKE:
HIS LOVE AND AMBITION

Fuurin Kazan - 1992 - Color - Fullscreen - 2 Discs

This samurai drama is the life story of Yamamoto Kansuke, a lonely genius of military
strategy during the 'Age of Warring Clans' in the 16th century. Kansuke works under
Takeda Shingen and pursues his dream of unifying the whole country through aiding
the warlord of Kai. At the same time, Kansuke supports Shingen's concubine Yu with
his selfless affection for the woman who hates, but eventually loves, the warlord who
killed her father and family. With the aid of Kansuke's strategies, Shingen expands his
power northward, where he is destined to fight with Uesugi Kenshin, the warlord of
Echigo. Shingen's war banner contained the famous phrase "Fuu-Rin-Ka-Zan", taken
from Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War'. This phrase refers to the idea of being "Swift as the
Wind, Silent as a Forest, Fierce as Fire and Immovable as a Mountain". The phrase
demonstrates both Shingen's policies and warfare strategy. The drama portrays how
those who fought for their dreams faced their destinies in that turbulent age. 2 discs,
over 3 hours of entertainment, a
must see for any fan of samurai warlord history!

SASAKI KOJIRO - PART 1
Sasaki Kojiro - 1957 - B/W - Widescreen

Historical facts: Sasaki Kojiro (1585 - April 14, 1612) also known as Ganryu Kojiro)
was a prominent Japanese swordsman, born in the Fukui Prefecture. Kojiro's favored
weapon during combat was a straight-edged nodachi with a blade-length of over 90
cm (3 feet) long. As a comparison, the average blade-length of the regular katana
seldom surpasses 70 cm. It was called the "Monohoshi Zao" (Clothes-Drying Pole,
often translated into English as "The Drying Pole"). Despite the sword's length and
weight, Kojiro's strokes with the weapon were unnaturally quick and precise.

Movie Synopsis: Ronin Sasaki Kojiro longs to find a loving companion to fill the void in
his heart as he pursues his ultimate goal of becoming a master swordsman. Along the
way, he encounters another great swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi! The two swords-
men are destined to clash in an epic duel to the death. This movie is considered by
many as the ultimate portrayal of Sasaki Kojiro’s life.

SHINSENGUMI
Shinsengumi - 1987 - Color - Fullscreen - 2 Discs

On June 5, 1864 the Shinsengumi raided anti-Shogunate activists at Kyoto's Ikedaya
Inn. This act not only saved the city from the planned fires which were being used to
cover up the kidnapping of the Emperor, but also elevated the group to fame and a
place in history. Nearly 300 years of the Tokugawa's rule would be torn apart by
extremists bent on restoring Imperial power. As the alliance of atsume-Choshu-Tosa
Clans progressed, only the Shinsengumi was able to stand up to them, and delayed
the eventual fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. This is the story of that famous group,
led by Kondo Isami, who is portrayed to per-fection by motion picture star Matsukata
Hiroki in one of the most thrilling versions of this exciting story. From their birth as a
small group of ronin attached to the Aizu Clan, until their eventual fall with the
government's collapse.

SHOGUN'S ADVISOR
Tenka no Goikenban - 1962 - Color - Anamorphic Widescreen (16:9) - Extras

Digitally Remastered 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen Version!

When an incident occured at 7 a.m. on Jan. 2, 1629 in front of the main gate to Edo Castle it set in motion one of the most exciting stories ever told about the early days of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Just one day earlier, the shogun's relatives and high ranking daimyo lords had paid their New Year's respects. The next day was for lower ranking lords and hatamoto retained by the Shogun to do the same. Lord Horio Inaba had just switched loyalties from the losing Toyotomi side to that of the Tokugawa and was rudely greeted by a detractor who threw the disloyal samurai and his palanquin into the Edo Castle moat. What followed is a tale not to be missed. A true classic of Japanese history torn from the pages of time. (aka "Knightly Advice")

SHOGUN'S VAULT, THE
Gokinzo Yaburi - 1964 - Color - Widescreen

Although he is best known for his 'Joys of Torture' series of films, noted
director Ishii Teruo also created some truly excellent jidai-geki films, and this
may the best of all. Okawa Hashizo is 'Red Peony' Hanji who is thrown into a
prison cell where he gets involved in a plot to steal government gold from the
Shogun's vault. A tough fighter, he has to show his ability in order to keep from
getting himself killed by the prisoners, too. Co-starring some of the biggest
name in movies at the time, including Kataoka Chiezo and Tanba Tetsuro
this film is loaded with surprises. From the opening moments when prisoners
carry out their own form of justice, killing a crooked ex-constable, it is clear that
this is the work of a visionary filmmaker. Powerful, exciting, filled with
suspense, and loaded with great action, Gokinzo Yaburi is a true classic.
One of the best films ever produced at Toei Studio, everything is not as it
seems. Watch to see the mystery unfold as the tension mounts! A Japanese
'caper' film, like no other! (TV Broadcast quality)
