Hanpeita caught in a trap that could ultimately cost him his life. This unusual story
bears a strong similarity to that of Sakamoto Ryoma, another samurai who wanted to
open Japan to the West in order to learn the technology and then use it to defeat the
European powers, whle avoiding bloodshed between Japanese people. Like Ryoma,
Tsukigata Hanpeita was a man who had a vision of the future that eventually would
come to pass. This is one of Okawa Hashizo's finest dramatic performances

MINAMOTO YOSHITSUNE

physically superior Benkei won, but the agile Yoshitsune. He defeated the crude giant
with his swift and skillful movements and superior fighting techniques. Legend has it
that Shanao had received his sword training by the Tengu. They are mythological

NINJA HUNT
"Ninja Gari" - 1982 - Color - Fullscreen - Extras

It's a rare occasion when a noted filmmaker like Yamauchi Tetsuya gets to re-visit a
previous film, and in this re-make of NINJA GARI, he not only does that, but has created
an even better piece. While the original from 1964 starred the great old-time actor
Konoe Jushiro, this version is perfectly cast with his son Matsukata Hiroki in the lead
as Wadakuro, one of four ronin hired to fight against the Shogunate's plot to abolish the
Gamo Clan, who are struggling to reinstate their young heir Tanemaru as their Lord.
Facing the threat of the Koga Ninja, Wadakuro shows his own cruelty while on a
personal vendetta. This is a very brutal film, with lots of realistic ninja action, violent
deaths, a dark story line and is completely without any light-hearted 'humor' elements
that Toei used to incorperate back in the golden era. And with Matsukata Hiroki's
outstanding martial skills, the swordplay is even better in this one. This is definitely one

NOBUNAGA'S COFFIN
"Nobunaga no Hitsugi" - 2006 - Color - Widescreen

Planning to conquer the nation, Oda Nobunaga built Azuchi Castle which had Japan's
first multi-storied central tower. For the next 3 years, he sent his men into various lands
to subdue the country. Because one of his vassals, Hashiba Hideyoshi, had difficulty in
taking Takamatsu Castle in Bichu-no-kuni, he sent Akechi Mitushide out as
reinforcement for Hideyoshi. At the same time Nobunaga decides to enter Kyoto. The
day before his going into Kyoto, he calls his loyal vassal Ota Nobusada and tells him a
secret. In addition he gives Nobusada five wooden boxes for safekeeping. Nobusada
was famous for being loyal to Nobunaga to the point of idiocy and was called "Gyuichi"
(the Cow). Nobunaga takes a handul of men and proceeds towards Kyoto. Early in the
morning 2 days later, Gyuichi learns of Nobunaga's death at Honnoji Temple due to
treachery. It was impossible for Nobunaga's small number of men including Mori
Ranmaru to withstand Mitsuhide's forces and they were said to have perished in the
temple fire. But the strange thing is, Nobunaga's remains could not be found.

adversaries. Although Kataoka Chiezo passed away in 1983 at the age of 79, he still has

SHOGUN IEMITSU SHINOBI TABI

To show his prestige to the Imperial Court the third Shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu,
journeys to Kyoto along the Tokaido, a road fraught with danger. Iemitsu, using
the name Tokuyama Takenoshin, travels in secret with a small group consisting
of his bodyguard Yagyu Jubei, Okubo Hikozaemon, Isshin Taro, and Otsuta.
Meanwhile an actor pretends to be the Shogun in the procession. This
action-packed adventure is filled with exciting sword and ninja battles that will
determine the future of the Tokugawa Shogunate and set the course for Japan's
golden era.

SHOGUN'S VAULT, THE

Although he is best known for his 'Joys of Torture' series of films, noted
director Ishii Teruo also created some truly excellent jidai-geki films, and this
may the best of all. Okawa Hashizo is 'Red Peony' Hanji who is thrown into a
prison cell where he gets involved in a plot to steal government gold from the
Shogun's vault. A tough fighter, he has to show his ability in order to keep from
getting himself killed by the prisoners, too. Co-starring some of the biggest
name in movies at the time, including Kataoka Chiezo and Tanba Tetsuro
this film is loaded with surprises. From the opening moments when prisoners
carry out their own form of justice, killing a crooked ex-constable, it is clear that
this is the work of a visionary filmmaker. Powerful, exciting, filled with
suspense, and loaded with great action, Gokinzo Yaburi is a true classic.
One of the best films ever produced at Toei Studio, everything is not as it

The action begins at Karasuyama in the beautiful Shimotsuke Province, as this
exciting and romantic tale unfurls with the joining of two of Japan's major stars, the
ever-popular Misora Hibari and handsome screen idol Hayashi Yoichi (best known in
the west as Yagyu Gumbei in the 4th Baby Cart movie). When Sir Saeki kills his father,
Sentaro takes up arms and cuts him down. Sentaro, a commoner, was taught
swordsmanship by Sir Ittosai, a master martial artist, and must take to the road after
the incident. The fireworks truly begin when he meets Oshima, a singer from the Juzo
Troupe with a drinking problem. This movie excellent movie is clearly a cut above the
rest with some of the finest acting and action yet from Toei Studios.

The fate of the Satomi Clan lies in the hands of 8 warriors of prophecy, each of
whom were born with a crystal orb. The monk, Daisuke, embarks on a journey to
find these warriors and reunite the 8 orbs they carry so that they may fulfill their
destiny. The original story was the signature work of Edo period author Takzawa
Bakin, called "Nanso Satomi Hakkenden". It was first published nearly 200 years
ago in 1815. "Nanso" in the title refers to an area that is today southern Chiba
Prefecture. Takizawa’s Tale combines stories of the Satomi Clan, an actual
family that controlled an area centered in southern Chiba from about 1450 until
the early Edo period, with elements from the Chinese story known as "Suikoden".
"Nanso Satomi Hakkenden" is a master-work that took Takizawa 106 volumes
and 28 years to complete. Movie series, 5 parts. (TV Broadcast quality.)

The battle between Boss Sukegoro of Iioka and Boss Shigezo of Sasagawa has been portrayed many times, most notably in the first Zatoichi film, where the blind man befriends the tubercular ronin Hirate Miki, before cutting him down in one of the great duels in cinema history. This version stays much closer to the true story and and one of the most exciting finales in Japanese film, the real story behind this epic struggle comes to life.

SPEAR OF HEROISM

This thrilling story shows spears, swords, conspiracy, love and tears through the
friendship between a ronin (Konoe Jushiro) whose whole life was dedicated to
mastering the spear and a passionate young nobleman (Satomi Kotaro). During
the reign of Shogun Yoshimune there was a ronin named Fuwa Mondo teaching
the spear at the Shindo Munen dojo. One day Mondo chastised a girl dressed like
a man after she had splashed water on a young boy. The girl, Suzue, was the
younger sister of Ino Yuya, a member of Sword Guard Sound Team led by the
Shogun's second son, and her shame was felt by the entire team. Even though
they tried to retaliate, none were the match of Mondo's great skill. One night, on
the way home from enjoying night time cherry blossoms on Atago Mountain,
Mondo saved Suzue from being attacked by a group of masked men. To thank
him, Gennosuke invited Mondo to Edo Castle. What happens next must be seen
to be believed! This movie is loaded with great spear fighting. With removable

In one of Toei's best early period films famous actress Koharu, played by Misora Hibari in one of her strongest roles, becomes involved in the search for the Shogun's treasure. Meanwhile a master swordsman, portrayed by the great Otomo Ryutaro, fights gallantly with two swords. In addition to Misora's strong performance, there is surprisingly good swordplay by another lady with martial skills in this highly entertaining mixture of action, adventure, love, betrayal, music, and with the slightest touch of humor. It's no wonder the stars of this film are still so popular in Japan to this very day!
