Tokuda Shinnosuke. Using this alter-ego, he solved problems and punished
corruption and injustice from his home base in the capital city of Edo. Out of the total of
831 episodes, this is the 500th episode Anniversary Special. Shogun Tokugawa
Yoshimune (Matsudaira Ken), upon learning that a powerful family in the Ryukyu
Islands had allied themselves with the Satsuma Clan in an effort to take over the
nation, sets off to the Ryukyu's to stop this dastardly plot. However, with his identity
exposed, numerous assassins set out to stop him from reaching his destination. Time
after time, Yoshimune is in real danger, and must be saved by former members of his

that had murdered her family when she was only a child. Matsudaira Ken shines in his
most famous role, the 'Roughneck' Shogun who travels the country seeking to stomp

entries in the series, and allows the story to develop more fully than the regular

BLAZING SWORD

Based on the Shiba Ryotaro story, this film dramatizes the life and times of
Hijikata Toshizo, as he joins the Shinsengumi patrol group which helped support
the Tokugawa Shogunate towards the end of the samurai era. Following in the
tradition of his other historical writings, this is one of the more accurate
representations of that group, and above all, the tremendous swordsman that
Hijikata was. Along with Okita Soji, the captain of the first group, who was afflicted
with 'Consumption' (Tuberculosis), this young ronin who had come to the capital
along with his master from at the sword academy, Kondo Isami (who later went
on to become the leader) and climaxes in the grand battle at Ikedaya Inn where
the group saved the Emperor from being abducted and the city of Kyoto reduced
to flames. A very important motion picture, with realistic depictions of swords-
manship that ranks with the best!

BLOODED SPEAR

In 1701, the ruling shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi placed Asano Takumi-no-kami Naganori, the lord of Ako, in charge of a reception of envoys from the Imperial Court in Kyoto. He also appointed the protocol official Kira Kozuke-no-suke Yoshinaka to instruct Asano in the ceremonies. On the day of the reception, at Edo Castle, Asano drew his short sword and attempted to kill Kira after he had insulted Asano. For this, he was sentenced to commit seppuku, but Kira went without punishment. The Shogunate confiscated Asano's lands and dismissed the samurai who had served him, making them ronin. Gonpachi is portrayed by the longtime star Kataoka Chiezo in one of his most heartfelt performances. The tension mounts throughout the film building to an exciting and surprising conclusion. A masterpiece in glorious black and white, this film ranks with some of the best works of Kurosawa, Yamanaka, and Ito.

Ryujin Misaki (Cape Dragon), located at the edge of the Genkai Sea, is known as
an isolation ward for leprosy patients. When Saotome Mondonosuke, a master
swordsman and 'Hatamoto' (direct retainer of the Shogun), hears news of a
doctor gone missing, he begins to suspect that things are not what they seem at
Ryujin Misaki. Intent on discovering the truth, Saotome launches a private
investigation. Known as "The Bored Hatamoto", Saotome Mondonosuke was the
subject of over 20 motion pictures. This popular series has since continued to
television where the role was taken over by Ichikawa Utaemon's son, Kitaoji
Kinya. The 'Crescent-scar' on Saotome's forehead is a license to kill, and rid
Japan of corruption and evil. This is one of the best films in the series, as

Yamaoka then sent his steward to borrow the plate back, but the pawnbroker coldheartedly refused. He died soon thereafter of an unknown cause. Soon after that, two warehouses were broken into, but nothing was taken. When Detective Shokichi seeks the help of Young lord samurai, in solving these mysterious crimes that plague the town he takes the case and immediately surmises that the thief was looking for something special. Could the answer be hidden in the coffin of a deceased merchant who had his most valuable things buried with him. The tension mounts and the mystery deepens. Can Young lord solve the case?

PART 2: After getting permission to dig up the pawnbroker's grave, Young lord samurai was surprised to find the body was missing, as was the Gosu plate. He had a suspect in mind, and was able to use him to learn of the pawnbroker's hideout and try to piece together the parts of the puzzle. Young Masamune upon learning of the death of Nobunaga decides that he is the man to
fill those sainted clogs. The fastest way to do this is to subjugate the neighboring
warlords. This is an action that results in the death of his father and younger brother and
not the least brings him to the attention of Hideyoshi and not in a good way either but
intervention by the regents nephew Hidetsugu and Maeda Toshiie save his neck
although he is forced to move to a smaller fief and send his wife to Kyoto as hostage.
Although curbed of his lofty ambitions his friendship with Hidetsugu again lands him in
hot water when Ishida Mitsunari arranges the downfall of the 'Unfortunate Hidetsugu',
Toshiie and Ieyasu save his neck and the flamboyant young warlord is sent to Korea
where he wins great honors. Upon his return Hideyoshi is dead and Masamune allies
himself with Tokugawa Ieyasu thus assuring the survival of the Date family. An amazing
story from beginning to the end!

Oshichi, a famous female detective, takes it upon herself to investigate the murder of a
woman, which occurs during an event for the festival of the Asakusa Shrine. Misora
Hibari was a huge star in Japan at that time, and her immense popularity led to many
film roles. In those days Toei Films usually featured a musical number of some sort,
and this is no exeption. The tradition of incorp-orating music and dance into jidai-geki
films lives on to this day, as witnessed by the 'Step-Dancing' segment in the current
ZATOICHI 2004 by Beat Takeshi. In addition to fine acting and an intelligent story, there
is some excellent swordplay here, with the top action hero Azuma Chiyonosuke teaming
up with the heroine as a drunken ronin with superb sword skills, which are put to good
use in having to save her from the murderers trying to avoid punishment.

really in the hands of Yanagisawa Mino-no-kami Yoshiyasu. Samurai were forced to give up

Yanagisawa had long coveted the "Yamabiko" Shamisen and hatched a plot to take it.
Upon getting married to the daughter of the murdered man, Prince Kogenta swears to
