fill those sainted clogs. The fastest way to do this is to subjugate the neighboring
warlords. This is an action that results in the death of his father and younger brother and

intervention by the regents nephew Hidetsugu and Maeda Toshiie save his neck
although he is forced to move to a smaller fief and send his wife to Kyoto as hostage.
Although curbed of his lofty ambitions his friendship with Hidetsugu again lands him in
hot water when Ishida Mitsunari arranges the downfall of the 'Unfortunate Hidetsugu',
Toshiie and Ieyasu save his neck and the flamboyant young warlord is sent to Korea
where he wins great honors. Upon his return Hideyoshi is dead and Masamune allies
himself with Tokugawa Ieyasu thus assuring the survival of the Date family. An amazing
story from beginning to the end!

LORD OF STEEL HEART

One of Toei Pictures best Warlord epics, this film tells the story of Matabei Goto, a good-
natured retainer who enjoys his saki, while still being a master of military strategy.
Featuring a bravado performance by Utaemon Ichikawa as Matabei and strong support
from Tomisaburo Wakayama and the rest of the Toei all-stars, this is an excellent example
of the best that historical epics can be. After Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated the remnants of the
Toyotomi faction at the Battle of Osaka Castle, he seeks to test the loyalty of his retainers.
When Matabei speaks his mind at Sunpu Castle, it causes a breathtaking scene as the
tension rises. Utaemon, while best known for his swordfighting scenes always preferred to
usehis ability as an actor, with a steely gaze to melt down his opponents. A brilliant motion

number 1000 at Gojo bridge, Shanao (later Yoshitsune), a young man of small and
fragile stature passed by. He wore a nice sword and played the flute. It was an

physically superior Benkei won, but the agile Yoshitsune. He defeated the crude giant
with his swift and skillful movements and superior fighting techniques. Legend has it
that Shanao had received his sword training by the Tengu. They are mythological
creatures, half-human/half-bird, and first-class fighters in martial art. After this
remarkable "mother of all sword fights", Benkei vowed eternal loyalty to Shanao. His
life took a complete turn. From now on he accompanied his new lord through

MINAMOTO YOSHITSUNE

NOBUNAGA'S COFFIN

Planning to conquer the nation, Oda Nobunaga built Azuchi Castle which had Japan's
first multi-storied central tower. For the next 3 years, he sent his men into various lands
to subdue the country. Because one of his vassals, Hashiba Hideyoshi, had difficulty in
taking Takamatsu Castle in Bichu-no-kuni, he sent Akechi Mitushide out as
reinforcement for Hideyoshi. At the same time Nobunaga decides to enter Kyoto. The
day before his going into Kyoto, he calls his loyal vassal Ota Nobusada and tells him a
secret. In addition he gives Nobusada five wooden boxes for safekeeping. Nobusada
was famous for being loyal to Nobunaga to the point of idiocy and was called "Gyuichi"
(the Cow). Nobunaga takes a handul of men and proceeds towards Kyoto. Early in the
morning 2 days later, Gyuichi learns of Nobunaga's death at Honnoji Temple due to
treachery. It was impossible for Nobunaga's small number of men including Mori
Ranmaru to withstand Mitsuhide's forces and they were said to have perished in the
temple fire. But the strange thing is, Nobunaga's remains could not be found.

The historical Taiga drama for 2005 is a life story of Minamoto Yoshitsune,
popular historical figure in Japan who is known to have been an excellent battle
commander in the very end of the Heian period. Yoshitsune, a member of the
Genji clan, contributed greatly to the clan's victory over their rival Heike clan and to
establishment of his brother's first shogunate in history. Based on a novel by
Tomiko Miyao, the drama portrays the life of the "super hero" focusing on the
rivalry and sympathy between Yoshitsune and Tairano Kiyomori, the head of the
