tale. Starting with the corrup practices of Lord Kira and Yanagi-sawa, the Shogun's
Secretary, which in essence led to the incident of Lord Asano's attacking Kira in the
Pine Corridor of the Shogun's Palace, this is the definitive version. Asano Takumi no
kami was a young lord with high scruples, who refused to join in the general
corruption and bribery which ran rampant in the capital at that time. By not giving
bribes, he angered Kira Kozuke no suke the elder lord in charge of protocol at the
Palace. Refusing to teach the younger man, and giving him false instructions was
only the beginning. Insults followed, and a man of honor had no choice but to draw

Ryujin Misaki (Cape Dragon), located at the edge of the Genkai Sea, is known as
an isolation ward for leprosy patients. When Saotome Mondonosuke, a master
swordsman and 'Hatamoto' (direct retainer of the Shogun), hears news of a
doctor gone missing, he begins to suspect that things are not what they seem at
Ryujin Misaki. Intent on discovering the truth, Saotome launches a private
investigation. Known as "The Bored Hatamoto", Saotome Mondonosuke was the
subject of over 20 motion pictures. This popular series has since continued to
television where the role was taken over by Ichikawa Utaemon's son, Kitaoji
Kinya. The 'Crescent-scar' on Saotome's forehead is a license to kill, and rid
Japan of corruption and evil. This is one of the best films in the series, as

Oshichi, a famous female detective, takes it upon herself to investigate the murder of a
woman, which occurs during an event for the festival of the Asakusa Shrine. Misora
Hibari was a huge star in Japan at that time, and her immense popularity led to many
film roles. In those days Toei Films usually featured a musical number of some sort,
and this is no exeption. The tradition of incorp-orating music and dance into jidai-geki
films lives on to this day, as witnessed by the 'Step-Dancing' segment in the current
ZATOICHI 2004 by Beat Takeshi. In addition to fine acting and an intelligent story, there
is some excellent swordplay here, with the top action hero Azuma Chiyonosuke teaming
up with the heroine as a drunken ronin with superb sword skills, which are put to good
use in having to save her from the murderers trying to avoid punishment.

Handsome action hero Chiyonosuke Azuma must come to the rescue of Yae and Kiku, daughters of drapers in Edo, who must travel to Kyoto in place of their ailing fathers to attend to some business affairs. It seems that both of their fathers, who are longtime friends have both taken ill at the same time and can't trust their inept clerks to make the trip for them. On their way to Kyoto, the two ladies are ambushed by a group of bandits. However, a good samaritan named Santaro then shows up and must use his considerable martial arts skills in order to save them. Satsuma and Choshu. The H Brigade of fire-fighters led by Oharu take exception to this
and thus begins a battle between the various factions. This is an extremely exciting film

casting. Hibari takes on the role of Mori no Ishimatsu, a young man who gets involved
with real-life Yakuza legend, Shimizu no Jirocho, 'Boss of the Tokaido'. Ishimatsu
manages to interfere with a dispute between the Shimizu and their competition, the
Marugame family, even going so far as to become an avenger’s assistant. It’s not the
first time Hibari has played a man in a film (also in Benten Kozo), and her acting skills

Sentaro takes up arms and cuts him down. Sentaro, a commoner, was taught
swordsmanship by Sir Ittosai, a master martial artist, and must take to the road after
the incident. The fireworks truly begin when he meets Oshima, a singer from the Juzo
Troupe with a drinking problem. This movie excellent movie is clearly a cut above the
rest with some of the finest acting and action yet from Toei Studios.

One of the great stories from Japan's rich history comes to life in this true tale of the bloody showdown between two rival yakuza gangs in the 1830's. The battle between Boss Sukegoro of Iioka and Boss Shigezo of Sasagawa has been portrayed many times, most notably in the first Zatoichi film, where the blind man befriends the tubercular ronin Hirate Miki, before cutting him down in one of the great duels in cinema history. This version stays much closer to the true story and and one of the most exciting finales in Japanese film, the real story behind this epic struggle comes to life.

TANGE SAZEN

One of Japan's most popular folklore characters, Tange Sazen, the One-eyed and
One-armed swordsman, must rescue the Yagyu Clan from the treachery of a Master
plotting to take over their postion as the Shogun's sword instructors. This is generally

the way. Otomo Ryutaro is best known for his role as the One-armed one-eyed ronin
